    Central Equine Database (CED) – UK Government Partner

    Equine Register provides and manages the Central Equine Database (CED) on behalf of the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). The CED is the national system of record for all equines in the UK, linking horses with their owners and underpinning traceability, biosecurity, and compliance with statutory identification regulations.

    Through Equine Register’s connected service, The Digital Stable, equine owners can update horse and personal details online. These updates automatically notify the 81 UK Passport Issuing Organisations and Studbooks, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and real-time compliance across the industry.

    Equine Register also provides the National ChipChecker which allows a free public look-up service to prevent fraud and theft.

    We are partnering with Global Vet Link (GVL) to provide horse owners in Canada with a seamless digital solution for connecting with veterinarians and accessing critical lab results.

    This collaboration enables owners to receive test results, including EHV-1 and Coggins certificates, directly from GVL labs, streamlining equine health management and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This user-friendly platform enhances efficiency, traceability, and convenience for both horse owners and veterinary professionals.

    Royal Veterinary College

    Working with the Royal Veterinary College, we are enabling horse owners using The Digital Stable App to contribute anonymous horse movement data, including GPS locations and time stamps. This data will be used for spatial and network analysis to enhance our understanding of equine infectious disease risks.

    The goal of this project is to identify contact networks and spatiotemporal risk clusters associated with competition and leisure horse movements within the UK. By analyzing these networks, we aim to improve disease risk assessment, surveillance and inform targeted control strategies to mitigate outbreaks.

    Genetic Research with KPU University

    In partnership with KPU University, we are pioneering a research program to identify inheritable diseases in equines. Using advanced testing across 80,000 genetic markers, we can detect patterns and correlations within genetic data, providing unprecedented insight into breeding, disease prevention, and herd management. Our goal is to make these tests affordable and accessible, enabling preventative screening before breeding and delivering long-term benefits to horse owners and the wider equine community.

    We've partnered with Ontario Equestrian (OE), the provincial sports organization for equestrian sport in Ontario, to roll out the Digital Stable. This centralized platform empowers OE members to protect their horses through secure storage of ID and medical records, stay informed with real-time alerts about disease outbreaks and natural disasters, and support biosecure sport and competition, strengthening welfare and safety across the equine community.

Stewart Everett - CEO & Co-Founder

Stewart is a recognised leader in digital animal traceability and biosecurity, with a pioneering focus on equine lifetime traceability and welfare. With over a decade of experience, he has driven innovation at the intersection of government policy, animal health, and technology, working with governments, regulators, industry partners, and equine communities worldwide.

As CEO of Vivaria Group, Stewart has led the transformation of Equine Register into a global platform provider, delivering national-scale systems for identification, movement tracking, welfare assurance, and disease control. Under his leadership, Vivaria has built intuitive SaaS platforms that connect equine owners, industry stakeholders, and governments — making compliance simpler and supporting better animal welfare outcomes.

Before founding Equine Register, Stewart co-founded a technology company whose award-winning software — recognised by the British Computer Society Award — was later acquired by Google. He also advised blue-chip organisations globally on digital strategies and co-founded a consumer products business that supplied FMCG products to the world’s largest retailers.

Stewart’s combination of technology innovation, policy expertise, and commercial experience continues to shape Vivaria’s vision, positioning the Group at the heart of digital traceability and welfare transformation.

Alex Shipp - Co-Founder / Group Innovation Director

Alex Shipp is a pioneering technologist, inventor, and co-founder of Equine Register, the original entity that evolved into Vivaria Group.

With a career defined by innovation and disruptive thinking, Alex was the technical architect behind the UK’s largest technology acquisition — the sale of MessageLabs to Symantec. At MessageLabs, he designed and scaled a global email security platform capable of handling billions of emails per day and developed Skeptic, a world-first malware detection engine that transformed email security for businesses worldwide.

At Vivaria, Alex helped architect the foundations of the platform that now delivers national-scale equine traceability, compliance, welfare, and assurance solutions. As Innovation Director, he continues to advise the executive team on platform vision, technical resilience, and product innovation, ensuring Vivaria remains at the forefront of digital infrastructure for the equine and wider animal sectors.

Paul Gray - Group Finance Director

Paul is a strategic finance leader (FCCA) with over 25 years of experience across financial services, SaaS, and high-growth companies. He has led finance through transformation, international expansion, and investor readiness, working closely with Boards and Audit & Risk Committees to ensure governance, compliance, and financial transparency.

At Vivaria, Paul leads the Group's financial management, planning, pricing, and commercial modelling — helping shape the strategy behind scalable, recurring-revenue growth. He supports operations across the UK, Europe, and North America, with a focus on building strong financial infrastructure to underpin long-term business performance.

Paul previously held senior roles at The Openwork Partnership, Lloyd's of London, Zurich Financial Services, and Friends Provident International. His earlier experience includes working with global regulators and strategy teams across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He brings a blend of enterprise discipline and startup agility, with a strong track record of aligning finance with strategy in both regulated and growth-stage environments.

Chris Andrews - Global Head of Product

Chris leads product development and proposition strategy for Vivaria Group, driving the creation of innovative, user-focused platforms that serve governments, industry, and equine owners worldwide.

An experienced product leader with a strong background in UX, UI, and customer experience design, Chris has been instrumental in developing Vivaria’s modular, scalable platform architecture. He works closely with the CEO and Group FD on strategic positioning, pricing models, and market development, ensuring Vivaria’s offerings meet the needs of both policy stakeholders and equine communities.

Chris also oversees brand and marketing activity through Vivaria’s external partners and collaborates with strategic stakeholders and industry partners to align product innovation with market opportunities. His leadership continues to shape Vivaria’s digital proposition and maintain its position at the forefront of animal traceability, welfare, and assurance solutions.

Mark Matthews - Non-Executive Director, Technology & Platform Assurance

Mark is an experienced enterprise architect with a track record of delivering large-scale, citizen-facing digital platforms. He has worked on some of the UK’s most significant national UK programmes, including serving as Technical Design Authority for the DEFRA/AHDB Livestock Information Programme, where he helped deliver a multi-species traceability service critical to animal health, biosecurity, and food safety.

Mark brings this expertise to his role as Non-Executive Director at Vivaria, acting as a sounding board to the executive team on technology, product development, and platform assurance. His insight into government-led infrastructure and regulatory-critical programmes supports Vivaria’s ambition to deliver secure, scalable solutions for equine traceability, welfare, and assurance.
